They are not just beautiful, they are truly total works of art: the stations of the Moscow Metro. The main axis normally forms a central passage leading to the exit or the other lines, flanked by the tunnels of both directions. Each station is appropriately labelled, the lighting is individually designed – oversized chandeliers hang above the tracks in some stations themselves. Decorative, floral elements such as Art Nouveau glass works, stucco work, Soviet symbols such as hammer and sickle, Communist stars, portraits of party leaders or well-known artists, but also scenes of local history decorate the halls. Depending on the epoch, the stations differ in their architectural style – the latest stations also celebrate contemporary architecture at the highest level.
